Ok, class, get your pencil and paper ready! Today we're going to learn some basic fundamentals on how to hire a Disc Jockey. Yes, hiring a DJ can be a little overwhelming, especially when your not quite sure what to look for. Let me give you a few basic facts that can help make your decision a little easier. So let's begin!
The Basics:
There are two kinds of people when it comes to hiring a Dj. Those who are aware of the impact their Dj will have on their event. And those who don't. In fact, a leading bridal magazine did a study that I found very interesting. They asked couples before their wedding to rate from 1-10 (1 being most important) who's services would be the most important to the overall success of their wedding. Note: even if your event is not a wedding, the same principles apply. The services included: the hall, food or caterer, bartenders, wedding cake, decorations, floral arrangements, wedding dress and tuxedos, transportation, entertainment, and photographer. When the information was averaged out "Entertainment" ended up No.6 on the list. After their weddings, the same couples were asked to rate the services again. When the information was averaged out this time, "Entertainment" took the No.1 spot. So you see, the first step toward finding a quality Dj is simply recognizing the importance of your decision.

Price vs Services:
Most people have no idea what to look for in a Dj. When I talk to a potential clent, I know instantly if this person is on the right track or headed for trouble. If their first sentence starts out "What do you charge?" or "I'm just looking for prices," I know this person is going to make a mistake so many people make when looking for a Dj. Since they really don't know what to look for, they are going to let the price make their decision for them. This is how people get stuck wth a bad Dj. And be honest, in some cases, it's not that the Dj was that bad but the Dj wasn't the right one for that particular event. You see, hiring the cheapest Dj doesn't guarantee a great bargain. On the other hand, hiring the most expensive Dj doesn't guarantee you'll get your moneys worth either.

So, how do you find the right Dj? Well, to find the right Dj, you need to focus on the "services" instead of the price. You need to know what qualities and services are important to you before you start looking. Maybe you want a Dj that can take a request? Or someone who can M.C. your event? Or someone who specializes in a certain style of music? Whatever it is, you need to know what you are looking for up front. You also need to know a little about the Dj themselves. Like, how long have they been in the business? How did they get started? What kind of events do they specialize in? Do they have referrals? Do they offer a guarantee? The more questions you can ask the better! When you find someone who can answer all you questions and concerns and still fits into your budget, then you have found the person you'll want to hire. Doesn't that sound like a better way to hire a Dj than those focusing on cost alone?

Bottom Line:
When it comes to Djs (like most businesses), there is the good, the bad and the ugly. If you let the cost make your decision for you, you might get what you paid for. Instead focus on the services that are important to you and your event. Because, in the end when your guests complement you on how much fun they had, whatever the price, it was money well spent!
